The Beauty of Handcrafted Takayama Chasen

Takayama is a region in Nara, with centuries of chasen-making heritage. Known for their fine balance and durability, Takayama Chasens are revered for their role in preserving the traditions of the Japanese tea ceremony. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, each whisk is meticulously handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo, reflecting the precision and quiet dedication of skilled artisans. This craftsmanship embodies the spirit of harmony and mindfulness, making the Takayama Chasen not just a tool, but an enduring symbol of Japan’s tea culture.

Are you choosing your whisk correctly?

Bigger doesn't mean better. For beginners, we recommend chasens (whisks) with around 70 prongs. More prongs make it easier to create a nice foam for usucha (thin tea), but the whisk tends to be larger and can be hard to use. In contrast, lower-pronged chasens are smaller and easier to handle, but they’re less effective at producing a smooth foam. Instead, they’re traditionally designed for preparing koicha (thick tea), where a smooth, paste-like consistency is desired.
